Flashback Friday – Mind Control Theories & Techniques Used By Mass Media

[Editor’s Note]

Flashback Friday articles mirrored in-part from other websites will be high-caliber missives not only because they contain extremely pertinent information for our times, but also because those seeking truth may not realize they are available.

[Editor’s Note]

Mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate the masses. It shapes and molds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and acceptable. This article looks at the workings of mass media through the theories of its major thinkers, its power structure and the techniques it uses, in order to understand its true role in society.

Programming Through Mass Media

Mass media are media forms designed to reach the largest audience possible. They include television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, records, video games and the internet. Many studies have been conducted in the past century to measure the effects of mass media on the population in order to discover the best techniques to influence it. From those studies emerged the science of Communications, which is used in marketing, public relations and politics. Mass communication is a necessary tool to insure the functionality of a large democracy; it is also a necessary tool for a dictatorship. It all depends on its usage.

In the 1958 preface for A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a rather grim portrait of society. He believes it is controlled by an “impersonal force”, a ruling elite, which manipulates the population using various methods.

“Impersonal forces over which we have almost no control seem to be pushing us all in the direction of the Brave New Worldian nightmare; and this impersonal pushing is being consciously accelerated by representatives of commercial and political organizations who have developed a number of new techniques for manipulating, in the interest of some minority, the thoughts and feelings of the masses.”
– Aldous Huxley, Preface to A Brave New World

His bleak outlook is not a simple hypothesis or a paranoid delusion. It is a documented fact, present in the world’s most important studies on mass media. Here are some of them:

Elite Thinkers

Walter Lippmann

Walter Lippmann, an American intellectual, writer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner brought forth one of the first works concerning the usage of mass media in America. In Public Opinion (1922), Lippmann compared the masses to a “great beast” and a “bewildered herd” that needed to be guided by a governing class. He described the ruling elite as “a specialized class whose interests reach beyond the locality.” This class is composed of experts, specialists and bureaucrats. According to Lippmann, the experts, who often are referred to as “elites,” are to be a machinery of knowledge that circumvents the primary defect of democracy, the impossible ideal of the “omnicompetent citizen.” The trampling and roaring “bewildered herd” has its function: to be “the interested spectators of action,” i.e. not participants. Participation is the duty of “the responsible man”, which is not the regular citizen.

Mass media and propaganda are therefore tools that must be used by the elite to rule the public without physical coercion. One important concept presented by Lippmann is the “manufacture of consent”, which is, in short, the manipulation of public opinion to accept the elite’s agenda. It is Lippmann’s opinion that the general public is not qualified to reason and to decide on important issues. It is therefore important for the elite to decide “for its own good” and then sell those decisions to the masses.

“That the manufacture of consent is capable of great refinements no one, I think, denies. The process by which public opinions arise is certainly no less intricate than it has appeared in these pages, and the opportunities for manipulation open to anyone who understands the process are plain enough. . . . as a result of psychological research, coupled with the modern means of communication, the practice of democracy has turned a corner. A revolution is taking place, infinitely more significant than any shifting of economic power. . . . Under the impact of propaganda, not necessarily in the sinister meaning of the word alone, the old constants of our thinking have become variables. It is no longer possible, for example, to believe in the original dogma of democracy; that the knowledge needed for the management of human affairs comes up spontaneously from the human heart. Where we act on that theory we expose ourselves to self-deception, and to forms of persuasion that we cannot verify. It has been demonstrated that we cannot rely upon intuition, conscience, or the accidents of casual opinion if we are to deal with the world beyond our reach.”
–Walter Lippmann, Public Opinion

20-Year CBS News Veteran Details Massive Censorship And Propaganda In Mainstream Media

via: ZeroHedge

MainstreamMediaCensorship

Journalists should be dark, funny, mean people. It’s appropriate for their antagonistic, adversarial role.

– Matt Taibbi, in this New York Magazine article

Reporters on the ground aren’t necessarily ideological, Attkisson says, but the major network news decisions get made by a handful of New York execs who read the same papers and think the same thoughts.

Often they dream up stories beforehand and turn the reporters into “casting agents,” told “we need to find someone who will say . . .” that a given policy is good or bad. “We’re asked to create a reality that fits their New York image of what they believe,” she writes.

– From the excellent New York Post article: Ex-CBS reporter’s book reveals how liberal media protects Obama

Earlier this week, I published a piece titled, Former CBS Reporter Accuses Government of Secretly Planting Classified Docs on Her Computer, which I thought was incredible in its own right, yet the information in that post seems almost trite compared to the flood of information Attkisson has revealed to the New York Post’s Kyle Smith.

The following excerpts from the piece will confirm all of your worst suspicions about mainstream media:

Sharyl Attkisson is an unreasonable woman. Important people have told her so.

When the longtime CBS reporter asked for details about reinforcements sent to the Benghazi compound during the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack, White House national security spokesman Tommy Vietor replied, “I give up, Sharyl . . . I’ll work with more reasonable folks that follow up, I guess.”

Another White House flack, Eric Schultz, didn’t like being pressed for answers about the Fast and Furious scandal in which American agents directed guns into the arms of Mexican drug lords. “Goddammit, Sharyl!” he screamed at her. “The Washington Post is reasonable, the LA Times is reasonable, The New York Times is reasonable. You’re the only one who’s not reasonable!”

Interesting, because as Matt Taibbi notes in the quote at the top, investigative journalists are not supposed to be reasonable. I digress…

In nearly 20 years at CBS News, she has done many stories attacking Republicans and corporate America, and she points out that TV news, being reluctant to offend its advertisers, has become more and more skittish about, for instance, stories questioning pharmaceutical companies or car manufacturers.

Working on a piece that raised questions about the American Red Cross disaster response, she says a boss told her, “We must do nothing to upset our corporate partners . . . until the stock splits.” (Parent company Viacom and CBS split in 2006).

Blind Trust Of Authority

TheRedPillGuide
October 29, 2014

“Its the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority.”
– Benjamin Franklin

Speaking truthfully oft leads to volatile consequences. Heck, sometimes just hinting at something different leaves one getting askance looks from those that do not have open minds.

Yet, the truth is inherently very crystal clear. And no matter how much some wish to twist it, belittle it, or rip it apart, alas, it remains.

Getting to the truth is not always so simple. This is especially true if there are elements within society – mainstream media, for instance – that not only script stories, but have been shown to lie continuously about vital issues.

It is due to this ubiquitous lying that individuals still trust authority, even though many authority centers have been shown to lack credibility time and time again.

How many people know that decades ago doctors were recommending cigarettes decades ago? Perhaps it was because while some doctors were making on average $11,058, they were receiving $5,000 payments from tobacco companies.1

Doctors, whose slated dictum – the Hippocratic Oath – echoes “Do no harm”, have often times gone counterintuitively against that Oath.

Besides extolling the virtues of cigarettes2, Doctors relentlessly continue to peddle vaccines – laden with nocuous mercury – onto the ignorant public.

Dentists are another group of professionals that people have trusted in overtime. However, this trust has not always been warranted. One huge reason for this is that they have continued the use of dental fillings containing the harmful substance mercury.3

Even though evidence is increasing of the dangers of this issue4, still about half of all dentists still opt to use mercury fillings.5

Other professionals that have caused myriad societal issues in certain places are rogue police officers. Although may cops do great work, there is a small subset who ruin the name of the majority, and in such instances engage in brutal violence of many kinds6, while also being getting caught in the act7, or outright doing heinous acts no one in authority should ever do such as making a child sit with a bloody corpse8.

California Cops were even found recently sharing nude photos from DUI suspects and calling it a ‘game’. Disgusting right?

Another extremely trusted bracket of society are authoritative figures in Religious circles. Even though they are well trusted historically, Pope Francis himself stated that 2% of all clerics were pedophiles9. And that is only what they are willing to admit to. Something tells me this is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Of course, a select portion of the general population that trust the mainstream media even though they have continuously lied to us. The mainstream media are a cornerstone of the blind-trust mechanism that people submit too because they are the main weapon of propaganda by the comptrollers.

Furthermore, an extremely frustrating transition that is taking place is the implementation of Common Core within the American Education Indoctrination system. Future generations are being put into locks-step using their disturbing guidelines.

Everything from corporate indoctrination10 to mind-boggling math problems that make no sense whatsoever and designed to make children confused11 are on tap. The issue has deteriorated so much that already the State of Indiana has opted to detach from such a system and create their own academic standards.12

With all this taking place, teachers are still opting to teach indoctrinate future generations at the behest of corporations, to make them good workers, but not outstanding critical thinkers. Ever wonder why logic, finance, or nutrition courses are not mandatory in most [if not all schools?]. That would help people how to think, save money, and take control of their health. Such knowledge would make corporations lose hundreds of billions of dollars and allow the populace to be truly free, rather than indebted to the control grid from cradle to grave. These same corporations wholly disdain those who wish to take their educations into their own hands13, because they do not want critically thinking individuals, they just want mindless drones.

Yes, there does exist countless amounts of folks that carry out great jobs in a variety of fields.  But there also is a pervasive nefarious element that is responsible for more harm then people could imagine.

Lastly, one enormous section trusted by society are institutions of all types. Like some individuals, institutions often have rap sheets that would make Al Capone jealous.

Government institutions, CDC, FDA, etc that have repeatedly lied to us and will continue to do so until the people make them realize they know the criminality they are engaging in. Until then, they will remain the fox guarding the hen house so to speak.

With the totality of such evidence alight, how can one blindly trust authority?

Mainstream Media Exposed

TheRedPillGuide
October 27, 2014

the-western-mainstream-media-at-work

“Modern means of communications – the power afforded by print, telephone, wireless and so forth, of rapidly putting through directive strategic or technical conceptions to a great number of cooperating centers, of getting quick replies and effective discussion – have opened up a new world of political processes. Ideas and phrases can now be given an effectiveness greater than the effectiveness of any personality and stronger than any sectional interest.”
– H.G. Wells

“All over the place, from the populace culture to the propaganda system, there is a constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that they only role they can have is to ratify decision and consume.”
– Noam Chomsky

From the very moment the printing press came to be, the course of history was instantly altered.

Information, and more importantly ideas, now had the capability to change the breath of the land. This did not go unnoticed by those in power.

Shaping conscious thought – reality – now was possible in ways previous generations could only dream of.

Soon thereafter, propaganda would become an even more effective tool when used in conjunction with the printing press, and its latest extension – mass media.

This is why now, in our time, the CIA has had its tentacles embedded deeply within the mainstream media structure. But this is not a recent event. Since at least the 1950s or so, the CIA had people working on their payroll influencing the American public:

Why is that of importance? Because a press that is run by a separate entity such as the CIA, or a press that has to seek approval due to censorship before publishing stories is not a free press. Censorship is antithetical to the truth. This lack of truth by all mainstream networks should eviscerate any credibility they might have with the population.

An incisive quote by H.G. Wells when he wrote for the New York Times best encapsulates the ramifications of modern media:

“Modern means of communications – the power afforded by print, telephone, wireless and so forth, of rapidly putting through directive strategic or technical conceptions to a great number of cooperating centers, of getting quick replies and effective discussion – have opened up a new world of political processes. Ideas and phrases can now be given an effectiveness greater than the effectiveness of any personality and stronger than any sectional interest.”[1]

Like the kings and rulers of time past, this piercing effectiveness that communications can bring has was quickly put to use by rulers/globalists of our era.

“Like Hitler, who sought to bring individuals alienated by the Industrial Revolution and Depression into a hive-like German Volk, or united people, the globalists who control America’s mass media have attempted to bring citizens into one common worldview by the unremitting dissemination of homogenous news and information. Networks and cable channels routinely accept reports from “pool reporters, which results in many channels presenting the same version of the news.”[2]

The aforementioned statement by author and renown researcher Jim Marrs gravitates to the core of the matter succinctly.

An evolution of social control has taken place via a variety of modalities, spearheaded mainly by modern communications such as the television, the Internet, and to a lesser extent books and magazine et al. This control grid – and its endless propaganda – has locked a large portion of humanity in lockstep with the plans of the ruling powers.

This is a prime example why people must educate themselves and spend the time needed to not only learn how to think critically, but also sift through information carefully – much of it designed to distract you – in order to figure out what is pertinent and what is outright garbage. Being able to do accomplish this will mean the different between knowing the truth or living a lie.

One facet that has simplified this information lockdown has been the monopolization of Corporations that control the media. With only six media giants running the show and exercising unprecedented control, it does not take a genius to see that such a monopoly in information distribution clearly facilitates the shaping of our world.

In a society in which people do not bother to question anything, scripted stories become the daily dish du jour.

Some people seem to be waking up, based on how many people are detaching from networks such as CNBC, who recently had its viewership decline to 8-year lows.

A lot work remains to be done however. The propaganda is relentless, and the mind control and techniques employed by mass media have been ongoing for quite some time.

Only by continuously educating ourselves will we be able to figure out the lies told by the mainstream media such as when the Associated Press was caught lying about water fluoridation or when the media was caught lying [again] about supplements. Keep in mind these are only but a smidgen of the vast and elaborate falsehoods put forth by mainstream.

To finalize:

“One of our best-kept secrets is the degree to which a handful of huge corporations control the flow of information in the United States. Whether it is television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, or the Internet, a few giant conglomerates are determining what we see, hear, and read. And the situation is likely to become much worse as a result of radical deregulation efforts by the Bush administration and some horrendous court decisions,” warned Congressman Bernie Sanders, adding, “This is an issue that Congress can no longer ignore.”[3]

Such an ominous warning should be taken to heart, because our very livelihoods – and those of future generations – depend on it.

What steps will YOU take to educate yourself and others?

The choice is yours.

The Employment Rate In The United States Is Lower Than It Was During The Last Recession

via: TheEconomicCollapse
August 3, 2012

Did you know that a smaller percentage of Americans are working today than when the last recession supposedly ended?  But you won’t hear about this on the mainstream news.  Instead, the mainstream media obsesses over the highly politicized and highly manipulated “unemployment rate”.  The media is buzzing about how “163,000 new jobs” were added in July but the unemployment rate went up to “8.254%“.  Sadly, those numbers are quite misleading.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in June142,415,000 people had jobs in the United States. In July, that number declined to 142,220,000. That means that 195,000 fewer Americans were working in July than in June. But somehow that works out to “163,000 new jobs” in July.  I am not exactly sure how they get that math to add up.  Perhaps someone out there can explain it to me.  Personally, I find that the “employment rate” gives a much clearer picture of what is actually going on in the economy.  The employment to population ratio is a measure of the percentage of working age Americans that actually have jobs.  When it goes up that is good.  When it goes down, that is bad.  In July, the employment to population ratio dropped from 58.6 percent to 58.4 percent.  Overall, the percentage of working age Americans that have jobs has now been under 59 percent for 35 months in a row.

The following is a chart of the employment to population ratio in the United States over the past 10 years….

Mainstream Reporter Tells The Truth About Audit The Fed And The Creation Of The Federal Reserve

via: EconomicCollapseBlog
August 1, 2012

When someone in the mainstream media goes out on a limb to tell the truth, then the rest of us should go out of our way to applaud that effort.  Reporter Ben Swann of Fox 19 in Cincinnati is one of the few local television reporters in the United States that consistently tackles the tough issues.  As you can see from his“Reality Check” archives, he regularly does reports on the Federal Reserve, the emerging police state, the loss of our freedoms and liberties, the advance of globalism, the economic collapse, political corruption, etc. etc.  That is one reason why his YouTube channel is rapidly approaching a million views.  In his most recent Reality Check, Ben Swann asked this question: “Is auditing the Federal Reserve really necessary?”  In just four minutes, Swann covered the creation of the Federal Reserve, where money comes from, the 16 trillion dollars in secret loans given out by the Fed during the last financial crisis, and why an audit of the Fed is so important.  It really was extraordinary to watch a local mainstream news reporter tell the truth about these things.  We could definitely use about 1000 more reporters just like him.

The video of Ben Swann’s recent Reality Check is posted below.  If you have not seen it yet, it is definitely worth the 4 minutes that it takes to watch it….

New York Times openly admits mainstream media stories are scripted by the White House

via: NaturalNews
Friday, July 27, 2012
By: J. D. Heyes

[NaturalNews] Millions of Americans have long suspected that the so-called “mainstream media” is big-time controlled, whether selectively or institutionally. A recent New York Times story not only substantiates that belief, it proves just how controlled the messages are that are coming from those who mean to rule over us. What’s more, the story demonstrates that most major media sources are complicit in the packaging of information the public is “allowed” to hear.

The revelations may not necessarily be groundbreaking news to many Americans who already suspected they weren’t getting unfiltered and unbiased reporting, though the extent of control over the information reaching the public from the major campaigns may surprise many.

But the revelations should certainly be disturbing to voters who are trying to make choices based on altered or incomplete information.

Of course, that’s the point. Full disclosure would mean giving a rival something to campaign for (or against), so it’s understandable for a candidate to want to carefully control his or her message.

Where it becomes shameful is when the media willingly goes along.

Sorry – You can’t print that

Consider the re-election campaign of President Obama. According to the Times, quotes from the candidates often come back to them from the campaign headquarters in Chicago “redacted, stripped of colorful metaphors, colloquial language and anything even mildly provocative.” They are emailed to reporters who have beenallowed, essentially, to interview campaign officials, but only under the caveat that “the press office has veto power over what statements can be quoted and attributed by name.”

In a different age, perhaps, such a restrictive requirement might have drawn the ire of a respectable journalist. But no more; today, most “grudgingly” agree to such preconditions. Those who do not agree, it appears, are not given the opportunity to interview.

Once the interview is complete, the scrubbing process begins. The reporters check their interview notes and review tape recorders for the juiciest of sound bites. At that point, the quotes they select are submitted to the campaign for approval.

“The verdict from the campaign – an operation that prides itself on staying consistently on script – is often no, Barack Obama does not approve this message,” said the paper, whose own reporters, presumably, must subject themselves to the same treatment.

So much for the Old Gray Lady’s long-time mantra: All the news that’s fit to print.

Control from both sides of the aisle

Then again, maybe the phenomenon of pre-packaged quotes and releases is at least partially our fault. Americans, after all, seem to be obsessed with the “Gotcha!” mentality of sound-bite reporting.

But then again, did the mainstream media hook us? After all, they are the ones who have accustomed us to this kind of sensationalism – aren’t they?

“The push and pull over what is on the record is one of journalism’s perennial battles,” the Times said. “But those negotiations typically took place case by case, free from the red pens of press minders. Now, with a millisecond Twitter news cycle and an unforgiving, gaffe-obsessed media culture, politicians and their advisers are routinely demanding that reporters allow them final editing power over any published quotations.”

Yes, the “media culture” is “gaffe-obsessed,” but only because we’re still reading.

While this kind of quote pre-approval process is standard operating procedure for the Obama campaign, the campaign of Republican Mitt Romney has a quote quality control apparatus in place as well.

The paper said the Romney machine also likes to air-brush quotes, especially when it comes to interviewing his five sons. “Romney advisers almost always require that reporters ask them for the green light on anything from a conversation that they would like to include in an article,” said the Times.

In a classic understatement, the Times calls this unacceptable practice a “double-edged sword,” because reporters “are getting the on-the-record quotes they have long asked for, but losing much of the spontaneity and authenticity in their interviews.”

And the American people are losing too. If quotes are sanitized, what other information is being cherry-picked, or worse, being left out completely by a mainstream media that is supposed to be the protector of liberties and freedom, not a facilitator for the powers that be?

We may never know what we never know. And that’s the real danger.

Blanket anonymity at ‘new levels’

“It’s not something I’m particularly proud of because there’s a part of me that says, ‘Don’t do it, don’t agree to their terms,'” Major Garrett, a correspondent for the Washington, D.C.-based National Journal, one of the few journalists who spoke on the record about the contextual quote editing, told the Times. “There are times when this feels like I’m dealing with some of my editors. It’s like, ‘You just changed this because you could!'”

“We don’t like the practice,” Times news editor Dean Baquet said. “We encourage our reporters to push back. Unfortunately this practice is becoming increasingly common, and maybe we have to push back harder.”

Needless to say, the Obama campaign refused to allow anyone to go on record for the Times story. The report didn’t say whether the Romney campaign was asked to go on record for it.

But the paper did single out the current administration.

“Under President Obama, the insistence on blanket anonymity has grown to new levels,” the Times reported.

Mainstream Media Recovery Hoax

via: Alt-Market
By: Greg Hunter | USAWatchDog.com
July 25, 2012

USA Today’s headline Monday in the “Money” section of the newspaper read “Will fragile U.S. economy shatter?” This story should have come with an apology to readers for reporting a so-called “recovery” for a couple of years now that was, in reality, nothing more than bottom bouncing.  And even though the story talked about “worrying signs” and people taking jobs“for half the pay,” the writers still would not let go of the “recovery” theme.  Monday’s story said, “When the job market began to crack in April, most economists said they weren’t worried about the recovery. They’re worried now.  As the recovery slows, optimism is giving way to caution, with undercurrents of something darker.” (Click here for the complete USA Today story reprinted from The Tennessean.) Really, it all turned to crap in just three months?

In April, USA Today reported, “As the recovery finally puts down what appear to be stronger roots, it faces one big force (pent up demand) that could strengthen and reinforce it — and an even bigger one (spending cuts and tax increases at the beginning of next year) that threatens to derail it.” (Click here for the complete USA Today story.) What kind of whack-a-doodle reporting is this?  The recovery was finally putting down “stronger roots,” and three months later, the economy is “fragile” and might “shatter”?  How about it’s been bad all along, and the reporting is mostly a cheerleading job that gives people a false picture of what is really happening.

The New York Times Admits That Virtually Every Major News Organization Allows The News To Be Censored By Government Officials

via: AmericanDream
July 23, 2012

In one of the most shocking articles that the New York Times has ever put out, a New York Times reporter has openly admitted that virtually every major mainstream news organization allows government bureaucrats and campaign officials to censor their stories.  For example, almost every major news organization in the country has agreed to submit virtually all quotes from anyone involved in the Obama campaign or the Romney campaign to gatekeepers for “quote approval” before they will be published.  If the gatekeeper in the Obama campaign does not want a certain quote to get out, the American people will not see it, and the same thing applies to the Romney campaign.  The goal is to keep the campaigns as “on message” as possible and to avoid gaffes at all cost.  But this kind of thing is not just happening with political campaigns.  According to the New York Times, “quote approval” has become “commonplace throughout Washington”.  In other words, if you see a quote in the newspaper from someone in the federal government then it is safe to say that a gatekeeper has almost certainly reviewed that quote and has approved it.  This is another sign that “the free and independent media” in this country is a joke.  What we get from the mainstream media is a very highly filtered form of propaganda, and that is one reason why Americans are turning away from the mainstream media in droves.  People want the truth, and more Americans than ever realize that they are not getting it from the mainstream media.

The following quote comes from the recent article in the New York Timesmentioned above and it is absolutely jaw dropping….

The quotations come back redacted, stripped of colorful metaphors, colloquial language and anything even mildly provocative.

They are sent by e-mail from the Obama headquarters in Chicago to reporters who have interviewed campaign officials under one major condition: the press office has veto power over what statements can be quoted and attributed by name.

Most reporters, desperate to pick the brains of the president’s top strategists, grudgingly agree. After the interviews, they review their notes, check their tape recorders and send in the juiciest sound bites for review.

The verdict from the campaign — an operation that prides itself on staying consistently on script — is often no, Barack Obama does not approve this message.

This is an article that everyone needs to read.  If you have not read it yet, you can find it right here.

What all of this means is that both the Obama campaign and the Romney campaign essentially have “veto power” over any quotes from those campaigns that we see in the newspapers.

According to the New York Times, virtually every major news organization has agreed to submit their quotes for “quote approval”….

It was difficult to find a news outlet that had not agreed to quote approval, albeit reluctantly. Organizations like Bloomberg, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Reuters and The New York Times have all consented to interviews under such terms.

This is absolutely disgusting, and it goes against everything that our media is supposed to stand for.
